Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

There is currently no formal medical treatment for this condition.

IBS is the term for a collection of symptoms that may include:

  • Abdominal (Stomach) Pain Or Cramping
  • Abdominal Bloating Or Swelling
  • Change Of Bowel Movements Such As Constipation, Diarrhoea (or both)
  • Excessive Wind
  • Urgent Need To Go To The Toilet
  • Passing Mucus
  • Feeling of “Not quite emptied” after going to the toilet.

These physical symptoms often lead to secondary psychological symptoms such as anxiety, depression, shame, fear and low self-esteem.

Research at Withington Hospital Hypnotherapy Unit, Manchester, UK concluded that “Hypnotherapy appears to be an effective long-term treatment for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) with sufferers feeling the benefits for at least five years.”

Patients were assessed immediately afterwards, and then 6 years afterwards.

71% of participants reported a positive outcome
Less than 10% of participants sought other treatments after trying hypnotherapy.
