We all have habits. Some habits, like breathing, keep us alive. Sometimes, however, habits can become a problem.
We can view habits as a continuum, ranging from beneficial habits, through mild, utterly harmless habits, to full-on disabling patterns like obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
Common habitual behaviours (which people would rather be without) include nail biting, skin biting, skin picking and hair pulling (Trichotillomania). People’s quality of life can also be affected by habitual thoughts, or habitual emotional responses.
The way we eat can often be habitual.
Habits can become a gateway to addiction – for example smoking or social drinking are often habitual behaviours before getting more and more out of control.
A change in habits leads to a change in life.
