Nerves

The detrimental effect of nerves and nervousness? To be "enervated" is to be drained of energy or vitality.

The term "nerves" means different things to different people:

Nerves can refer to nervousness about a particular event or situation, a lack of confidence (sometimes called performance nerves or performance anxiety – as in exam nerves, public speaking, or sports performance nerves).

Nerves can refer to shyness or social anxiety.

Nerves can mean general nervousness or anxiety – the term has been used historically for conditions we would now describe as generalised anxiety disorder (as in a 'nervous disposition').

And nerves can also refer to the physical nerves of the central and sympathetic nervous systems, which can be impaired by a wide range of conditions. Commonly, stress is a factor in exacerbating these kinds of nervous system disorders – so it can be very beneficial to find ways to manage or reduce your stress levels.

"There are 7 trillion nerves on the human body. Some people are capable of getting on every last damn one of them!"
